A new direction deserves a new post. I'm going to go to an Forest Alliance volunteer meeting. My reasoning is as follows.
I'm having trouble caring for things that are far from me, so I will (somewhat reluctantly) accept a trade-off. Instead of trying to address the world's most obvious sores in human suffering, the worst of which are far away from me, I'll see what sort of local stand can be made for the environment. There are strong local advocacy groups, I see the forests and mountains all around me, and I've cared about them for all of my adult life. There is a meeting soon - I'll go.

Hey. What with implementation of the proposed provincial HST in the next little while and Bill Vanderzalm's attempt at heading off legislation at the last moment in motion (isn't it??), it crosses my mind that if the government is willing to open itself up in this way, circumstances no doubt beg the technologically savvy activist (particularly one with local concerns) to implement an on-line method that is both secure and legally (perhaps legal implementation would come later) sound, for conducting petitions. Can you imagine how quickly the HST would have been defeated? Technically non-trivial, I'll admit. But TERRIBLY useful :)
